Halifax Seaport — Signage & Wayfinding
A working seaport. A cultural district. A gateway to Nova Scotia. One visual language to bring it all together.
The Halifax Seaport is a vibrant waterfront district extending from Piers 19 to 23, bringing together cruise terminals, cultural institutions, NSCAD University, shops, restaurants, event spaces, galleries and the Halifax Seaport Farmers’ Market. It is a place where industry, tourism, culture and everyday city life converge.
Sperry Design developed a comprehensive pedestrian signage and wayfinding system to help visitors, cruise passengers and locals navigate this diverse waterfront environment while creating a stronger and more recognizable sense of place.
Rather than introduce a visual language that felt foreign to the site, we looked to the Seaport itself for inspiration.
Shipping containers became the idea.
Authentic shipping containers were repurposed as large-scale gateway and directional signs, establishing an immediate connection to the working port. That industrial language was then carried throughout the broader system, with corrugated patterns, deep maritime blues, bold colour, typography and graphic detailing inspired by the materials and visual character of container architecture.
From towering pedestrian markers and bilingual directories to building identification, interior directional signage, gateway signs and environmental graphics, each element was designed as part of one cohesive family.
The system needed to perform on two levels: help people find their way and help them understand where they are.
At pedestrian scale, information is clear, direct and highly visible. At an architectural scale, the signs become landmarks themselves — providing orientation along the Seaport while adding colour, rhythm and identity to the streetscape. The illustrated vertical banners introduce another layer of storytelling, celebrating Nova Scotia and creating a memorable sense of arrival for visitors entering the city through the waterfront.
The result is a comprehensive signage and wayfinding system that does more than help people navigate. It creates a distinctive sense of place — combining bold environmental graphics, intuitive pedestrian wayfinding and maritime-inspired design into one cohesive visual experience that feels unmistakably connected to the Halifax Seaport.
